What Is the Law in the Bible? A Simple, Biblical Explanation

what is the law

A Simple, Biblical Explanation of the Law

When people hear the word “law,” they often think of rules, restrictions, or religious obligations.

But in the Bible, the Law is much more than a list of commands.

The Law is God’s perfect standard of righteousness given to reveal His character and show humanity their need for Him.

👉 Psalm 19:7 — “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul…”

The Law reflects:

  • God’s holiness
  • God’s justice
  • God’s moral will

It shows us not just what God requires—but who God is.

What Is the Law in the Bible?

The Bible presents the Law in several important ways:

1. The Law Reveals God’s Character

The Law is not arbitrary—it reflects the nature of God.

👉 Leviticus 19:2 — “Be ye holy; for I the Lord your God am holy.”

Every command flows from who God is.

2. The Law Defines Sin

Without the Law, we would not clearly understand sin.

👉 Romans 3:20 — “By the law is the knowledge of sin.”

The Law acts like a mirror—it shows us what is wrong, but cannot fix it.

3. The Law Demands Perfect Obedience

God’s standard is not partial obedience—but perfection.

👉 James 2:10 — “Whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.”

This reveals the seriousness of sin.

4. The Law Cannot Save

The Law was never designed to make us righteous.

👉 Galatians 2:16 — “By the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.”

The Law exposes sin—but cannot remove it.

5. The Law Points Us to Christ

The Law prepares the way for the gospel.

👉 Galatians 3:24 — “The law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ…”

It leads us to the only One who fulfilled it perfectly.

The Law and the Gospel

This is where everything comes together.

The Law shows us:

  • God’s standard
  • Our failure
  • Our need

The Gospel reveals:

  • God’s grace
  • Christ’s obedience
  • Our salvation

👉 Matthew 5:17 — Jesus fulfilled the Law

👉 Romans 8:3–4 — What the Law could not do, Christ did

What Jesus Did Regarding the Law:

  • Fulfilled it perfectly
  • Satisfied its demands
  • Took its penalty

Because of Christ:

  • We are no longer condemned by the Law
  • We are justified by faith
  • We now live by grace

Conclusion

The Law is not the enemy—it is a teacher.

It reveals God’s holiness and exposes our sin.

But it also points us to something greater.

👉 The Law shows us our need
👉 The Gospel provides the answer

You cannot understand grace without first understanding the Law.
