What Is Sin? A Biblical Explanation of Sin and Its Consequences

what is sin

A Simple, Biblical Explanation of Sin

Sin is one of the most important—and most misunderstood—words in the Bible.

Many people define sin as:

  • Mistakes
  • Bad habits
  • Personal failures

But the Bible gives a much deeper definition.

Sin is any thought, attitude, or action that goes against the will, law, and character of God.

👉 1 John 3:4 — “Sin is the transgression of the law.”

Sin includes:

  • What we do wrong (sins of commission)
  • What we fail to do right (sins of omission) — James 4:17

Sin is not just behavior—it is a condition of the heart.

What Is Sin in the Bible?

The Bible describes sin in several ways:

1. Sin Is Missing the Mark

👉 Romans 3:23 — “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”

We were created to reflect God’s glory—but sin falls short.

2. Sin Is Rebellion Against God

Sin is not just breaking rules—it is rejecting God’s authority.

👉 Isaiah 53:6 — “We have turned every one to his own way.”

3. Sin Entered Through Adam

👉 Romans 5:12 — “By one man sin entered into the world…”

Sin is not just something we do—it is something we are born into.

4. Sin Separates Us from God

👉 Isaiah 59:2 — “Your iniquities have separated between you and your God.”

Sin breaks fellowship with God.

5. Sin Leads to Death

👉 Romans 6:23 — “The wages of sin is death…”

This includes:

  • Physical death
  • Spiritual separation
  • Eternal judgment

Sin and the Gospel

Here is the turning point:

The Bible does not just explain sin—it reveals the solution.

👉 Romans 5:8 — “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

👉 2 Corinthians 5:21 — “He hath made him to be sin for us…”

What Jesus Did About Sin:

  • Took the penalty of sin
  • Satisfied the justice of God
  • Made forgiveness possible

Because of Christ:

  • Sin can be forgiven
  • The sinner can be restored
  • New life is available

Conclusion

Sin is serious—but it is not the end of the story.

You cannot understand salvation without understanding sin.

And you cannot appreciate grace until you see how great your need truly is.

👉 The bad news: All have sinned
👉 The good news: Christ died for sinners

  • Have you trusted Christ for the forgiveness of your sin?
  • How would you define sin in one sentence?
