Revelation 16: Seven Bowls of God’s Wrath

Introduction

Revelation 16 brings us to the final outpouring of God’s judgment during the last 3.5 years of the Great Tribulation.

These judgments are similar to the trumpet judgments of Revelation 8—but far more intense. The trumpets affected one-third of creation. The bowls affect everything.

This is not random destruction.
This is targeted judgment—aimed directly at the kingdom of the Beast and the rebellion of mankind.

These events move us rapidly toward two climactic moments:

  • The Battle of Armageddon
  • The Second Coming of Jesus Christ

Grievous Sores (Revelation 16:1–2)

The first bowl brings painful, incurable sores upon those who bear the mark of the Beast.

What’s It Mean?

  • This mirrors the sixth plague of Egypt (Exodus 9:9).
  • It fulfills warnings like Deuteronomy 28:27, 35.
  • It targets only those who aligned themselves with the Antichrist.

The Tragic Reality

Instead of repentance, mankind responds with blasphemy.

👉 Suffering does not automatically produce repentance.
👉 A hardened heart only grows harder under judgment.

Water Turned to Blood (Revelation 16:3–7)

The second and third bowls turn:

  • The sea into blood
  • All fresh water into blood

Unlike the trumpet judgments, where only one-third was affected—now it is total.

What’s It Mean?

  • Humanity shed innocent blood
  • Now God gives them blood to drink

This is divine justice.

Heaven’s Response

The angel declares:

“Thou art righteous, O Lord…”

And the souls under the altar (Revelation 6) finally receive vindication.

👉 God’s justice may seem delayed—but it is never denied.

Scorching Heat and Darkness (Revelation 16:8–11)

The Fourth Bowl: Scorching Heat

The sun intensifies and burns men with fire.

  • A reversal of Revelation 8:12 (partial darkening)
  • A foretaste of judgment described in Malachi 4:1–2

The Fifth Bowl: Darkness

The Beast’s kingdom is plunged into total darkness.

  • Like the ninth plague of Egypt (Exodus 10:21–23)
  • A fitting judgment on a kingdom ruled by the prince of darkness

The Spiritual Lesson

Even under extreme suffering:

  • They gnaw their tongues in pain
  • They blaspheme God
  • They refuse to repent

William Newell said it well:
👉 “Men who will not be won by grace will never be won at all.”

Gathering of the Armies (Revelation 16:12–16)

The Sixth Bowl

  • The Euphrates River dries up
  • The way is open for eastern armies to invade Israel

The Unholy Trinity at Work

  • Satan (the Dragon)
  • The Beast (Antichrist)
  • The False Prophet

They send out demonic spirits to gather the nations for war.

Armageddon

The armies assemble at Armageddon (Megiddo)—the final battlefield.

A Warning (v. 15)

“Behold, I come as a thief…”

This is a reminder:

  • The Church will not be caught off guard (1 Thessalonians 5:2)
  • But the world will be spiritually unprepared

👉 Stay awake. Stay ready.

The Final Bowl: “It Is Done” (Revelation 16:17–21)

Poured Into the Air

The seventh bowl is poured into the air—the domain of Satan (Ephesians 2:2).

This signals direct judgment on:

  • Satan’s religious system (Revelation 17)
  • Satan’s political system (Revelation 18)
  • Satan’s armies (Revelation 19)
  • Satan himself (Revelation 20)

“It Is Done!”

God declares:

“It is done!”

This marks the beginning of the end.

  • The system of rebellion collapses
  • The final judgments are set in motion

Cataclysmic Judgment

  • The greatest earthquake in history
  • Jerusalem divided into three parts
  • Cities of the nations destroyed
  • 100-pound hailstones fall from heaven

This mirrors the seventh plague of Egypt (Exodus 9:22–26).

Final Response of Humanity

Even then:

👉 They blaspheme God

Not repentance…
Only rebellion.

Final Truth: What’s It Mean for Us?

Revelation 16 teaches us four powerful truths:

1. God’s Judgment Is Real

Sin will not go unpunished forever.

2. God’s Justice Is Perfect

Those who shed blood will answer for it.

3. A Hardened Heart Is Dangerous

Judgment does not soften a rebellious heart—it exposes it.

4. Now Is the Time to Repent

Grace is available now—but not forever.

A Final Challenge

Revelation 16 is not just about the future—it’s a warning for today.

👉 If people will not repent under judgment…
👉 Will you repent under grace?

Jesus Christ offers salvation now.
Before the bowls of wrath are poured out.
Before it is too late.
