Scripture: John 5:1-47
Introduction
John 5 marks a turning point in the ministry of Jesus.
Until this point, many people were amazed by His miracles. In this chapter, Jesus heals a man who had been disabled for thirty-eight years and then makes astonishing claims about His identity and authority.
As a result, opposition against Him begins to grow.
The central message of John 5 is clear:
Jesus is not just a miracle worker. He is the Son of God who possesses divine authority over life, judgment, and salvation.
The Man at the Pool
Jesus traveled to Jerusalem and came to a pool called Bethesda.
Around the pool lay many sick, blind, and disabled people.
Among them was a man who had been unable to walk for thirty-eight years.
Imagine his situation.
For nearly four decades he had lived with disappointment, limitations, and hopelessness.
Jesus approached him and asked an unexpected question:
“Wilt thou be made whole?” (John 5:6)
The man explained that he had no one to help him into the pool.
He focused on his obstacles.
Jesus focused on the solution.
The Power of Christ
Jesus simply commanded:
“Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.” (John 5:8)
Immediately the man was healed: No treatment, No therapy, No delay.
The power of Christ accomplished instantly what thirty-eight years had not changed.
This miracle reminds us that nothing is impossible for God.
The same Savior who healed a broken body can heal a broken life.
He can restore hope where there seems to be none.
The Sabbath Controversy
The healing occurred on the Sabbath.
Instead of rejoicing over the miracle, religious leaders criticized the healed man for carrying his bed.
Their focus was on rules rather than mercy.
When Jesus was identified as the healer, opposition intensified.
The problem was not the miracle.
The problem was that Jesus challenged their understanding of the Sabbath and revealed His divine authority.
Religious traditions had become more important to them than compassion.
Jesus Calls God His Father
Jesus explained:
“My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.” (John 5:17)
The Jewish leaders understood exactly what Jesus meant.
John tells us:
“Because that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.” (John 5:18)
Jesus was not just claiming a special relationship with God.
He was declaring His equality with the Father.
This is one of the strongest statements about the deity of Christ found in the Gospel of John.
Jesus is fully God.
The Authority of the Son
Jesus then described several areas in which He possesses divine authority.
Authority to Give Life
“For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.” (John 5:21)
Only God can give life.
Jesus possesses that authority.
He gives spiritual life to those who believe and will one day raise the dead.
Authority to Judge
“For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son.” (John 5:22)
One day every person will stand before Christ.
The Judge of all the earth is Jesus Himself.
This truth should lead us to reverence, humility, and faith.
Authority to Receive Honor
Jesus declared:
“That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father.” (John 5:23)
To honor God while rejecting Christ is impossible.
The Father and the Son are united.
True worship always centers on Jesus.
The Promise of Eternal Life
One of the most encouraging promises in Scripture appears in this chapter.
“He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life.” (John 5:24)
Notice the certainty.
Jesus does not say believers might have eternal life.
He says they have it.
The believer has already passed from death unto life.
This assurance rests not on our performance but on God’s promise.
The Coming Resurrection
Jesus looked beyond the present and spoke of a future resurrection.
“The hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice.” (John 5:28)
One day every grave will be opened.
Every person will stand before God.
For believers, this is a promise of hope.
For unbelievers, it is a warning to prepare.
The same voice that called Lazarus from the tomb will one day call every person to resurrection.
Witnesses to Christ
The religious leaders questioned Jesus’ claims.
Jesus responded by presenting several witnesses.
John the Baptist
John pointed people to Christ.
The Miracles
The works Jesus performed demonstrated His divine power.
The Father
God the Father testified concerning the Son.
The Scriptures
The Old Testament pointed forward to Christ.
Jesus said:
“Search the scriptures… they are they which testify of me.” (John 5:39)
The entire Bible ultimately points to Jesus.
The Tragedy of Unbelief
Despite overwhelming evidence, many still rejected Christ.
Jesus said:
“And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.” (John 5:40)
The issue was not lack of evidence.
It was unwillingness to believe.
Many people today face the same challenge.
The Gospel is clear.
The invitation is open.
The question is whether we will come to Christ in faith.
What Does This Mean for Us?
John 5 teaches several important truths.
Jesus Has Authority Over Every Situation
The disabled man had no hope until Jesus arrived.
Christ remains our source of hope today.
Religion Cannot Replace Faith
The religious leaders missed the miracle because they were focused on rules rather than the Savior.
Jesus Is God
His claims leave no room for neutrality.
Either He is who He claimed to be, or He is not.
Eternal Life Is Available Today
Those who believe have everlasting life.
The Bible Points to Christ
Every page of Scripture ultimately reveals the glory of Jesus.
Conclusion
John 5 presents Jesus as the Son of God with authority over life, judgment, and eternity.
Just look at what Jesus did:
- He healed a man who suffered for thirty-eight years.
- He declared His equality with the Father.
- He promised eternal life to all who believe.
- He warned of coming judgment.
Most importantly, He invited people to come to Him and live.
The question remains the same today.
Will we trust Him, honor Him, and believe His Word?
Those who do will discover that the One who healed at Bethesda is still the Savior who gives life today.
